Monday Dec 17, 2012 is Free Shipping Day, a promotion created in 2008 to make people aware that it’s possible to wait until really late in the game and still have everything delivered by the night before Christmas. It’s right there on the website’s front page: “Free Shipping Day makes procrastination possible.” Stores include: Kohl’s, Radio Shack, OfficeMax, Express, Vans, Sports Authority and many more. In 2011, the event generated over $1 billion in online sales and surpassed Black Friday’s online earnings for the second year in a row. Shoppers are attracted to the late-season deals and promise of delivery by Christmas Eve. Offers will go live on FreeShippingDay.com at midnight EST on Dec. 17.
More than 1,500 retailers have signed on so far, and the entrepreneur who created Free Shipping Day says he expects the final tally to be 2,000. The event’s website will list all offers and deals at midnight ET on Monday. The hook is guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve, and millions of shoppers buy in. Online sales on Free Shipping Day exceeded $1 billion last year and have beaten Black Friday online sales for the past two years.
But if you’re thinking about shopping on Monday just to get the free shipping, step away from your wallet for a second and make sure you’re really getting good deals.
Dealnews.com looked into offers from past Free Shipping Days and found that many retailers put restrictions on which items qualify for free shipping, or require minimum orders. And, free shipping is hardly exclusive to Free Shipping Day. Numerous stores offer it throughout the year.
